Board Appeal

A Board Appeal takes a claim decision to the Board of Veterans' Appeals, where a Veterans Law Judge reviews it. It is requested on VA Form 10182 and offers three dockets: direct review, where the judge decides on the existing record; evidence submission, which opens a window for new evidence; and hearing, which adds a hearing before the judge along with an evidence window.

The Board sits above the regional office level, and its reviews generally take longer than the other decision review options. The docket choice trades speed against the chance to add evidence or be heard, which is exactly the kind of decision that belongs in the claims lane.

Board practice is squarely accredited-representative territory: attorneys, claims agents, and VSO representatives handle appeals at this level, and representation through a recognized VSO remains free at the Board, as everywhere else in the process.
